The essay's due date has been moved to tomorrow. Remember the following points:

--Bring a note from home to use the school's printer if you are currently experiencing troubles with your own
--The essay should be written in 12pt font, Times New Roman, Double-spaced
--Avoid spacious headings. These aren't fooling anyone...
-STAPLE your rubric to the back of your essay BEFORE class.

DEMOCRACY

Essential questions:

1. What allows Democracy to succeed?
2. What causes Democracy to fail?

democracy, according to Merriam-Webster.com, is a form of government in which people choose leaders by voting
--and--
a situation organization in which everyone is treated equally and has equal rights

Free-write: 1. What allows Democracy to succeed?
                  2. What causes Democracy to fail?

Switch with the person next to you.
Circle the words or phrases that are most powerful, poignant, or moving (don't circle cliches like, "democracy is good" or "democracy helps people"

Samuel Taylor Coleridge once wrote that poems were the best words in the best order. We have the best words and phrases, now let's put them in the best order!

7th grade Bad Ad Essay Update

Hello my favorite 7th graders in the whole wide world, who bring great joy to me each and every day,

I mentioned this in class to section 7-1, but 7-2 folks might not have received the message:

The computer labs are being used once again tomorrow, which means we will be missing valuable lab time.

In order for us to be focused and on task, I ask that you have at least ONE of your body paragraphs completed. You will be expected to turn revisions (of a single body paragraph) in tomorrow, so BE PREPARED! (You should have already drafted the entire essay, so this is not necessarily new work, but more of a reminder to bring in your work. I would recommend working on a body paragraph your least sure about. That way, my feedback can more directly address your concerns).

I'm also sensing confusion lately on what the body paragraphs are actually about. Follow the steps below to be extra-sure that you're working toward our goals:

1. Be sure to have the bad ad that YOU chose. This is what is being analyzed an written about.

2. You are using the 2 questions on the handout to form your body paragraphs (question #1 deals with text/subtext and question #2 deals with persuasive techniques. These are 2 separate body paragraphs

3.You are NOT writing a deconstruction paragraph. It is, however, a good idea to deconstruct your ad, following the four deconstruction questions. The answers to those questions should come up in your paragraphs about text/subtext or persuasive techniques (or both!)

4.

Topic Sentence Focus Area

Topic sentences tell your reader what your paragraph is about.

Formula: limited topic + specific impression= topic sentence

Example: (music) + it has a relaxing effect on people=  Music can have a relaxing effect on people (topic sentence)

Let's play the topic sentence game. Oh yes.

7th grade "HW"

Hello all. Today in class, I asked you to search your " media world" (whether that's internet, magazines, TV, billboards) for bad ads--ads that contain some hidden truth and disempower groups of people.

I will supply about 5-6 bad ads, but I think there's value in searching for one that speaks to you as well.

Please post any links to videos or internet ads in the comment section of this ad. I will review them, and there will be a final list of bad ads provided on Friday.

Happy bad ad hunting (MAKE SURE THEY ARE SOMEWHAT MODERN--From the last 5 years)

Deconstruction IREEC paragraph

TIPS FOR WRITING A STRONG DECONSTRUCTION PARAGRAPH:
·        Make sure your topic sentence clearly states what the body paragraph will be about.  To do this, answer the first question in your topic sentence.
·        Provide 2 pieces of EVIDENCE to support your topic sentence.
·        Make sure your explanations clearly show a response to the questions above.
·        Wrap up your body paragraph with a strong CONCLUDING SENTENCE.
·        Transition smoothly between sentences.  This should read like a smooth paragraph in which each sentence flows nicely into the next.  It should not read like each sentence is a separate answer to a different question.

SAMPLE DECONSTRUCTION PARAGRAPH:  What NOT to do

Companies construct their ads to hide the lies and discrimination inside.  So when you deconstruct the ads, you can really see all of the lies being told.  Some ways to deconstruct are asking yourself these questions:  Who or what is the target audience?  In this ad, it is men and women over 21 that drink.  Does this ad disempower any specific group of people?  In this case, yes it does it disempowers Spaniards, saying “ALL THE SPANISH you need to KNOW Mexico via Pacifico” This means you only need to know the name of a beer to be able to go to Mexico.  (BIG NO-NO)

Deconstructing ads

Terms:

Deconstruct- to take something apart

Stereotypes- a widely held, yet inaccurate belief that is applied to groups of people, individuals, or, things.

*gender roles- the societal expectations of men and women

Can you think of any gender stereotypes?

What types of ads typically contain stereotypes?

Can you think of particular products that necessarily must be lied about in order for them to become more appealing or acceptable to a target audience?
