Word Study- "The Lottery"

Hi all! First things first. Take out your essay draft. Circle a section for me to look at. I'll will try to give it back with written or verbal feedback by the end of class.

Meanwhile, we need someone is especially organized to write all the word study roots and prefixes we've had so far!

Then, you will need a loose sheet of paper. Your task to is to find confusing or complex vocabulary that contains any of the prefixes in the packet  or root words we've studied so far.

1. First skim the reading, finding words that fit the above criteria. Write those words in your journal (not on the loose paper)
2. In groups, you will compare the words you've found, either adding some to your list or deleting them if they aren't very complex (such as the word "produce"---yes, it contains a prefix we've studied, but is this a word you are unfamiliar with?)
3. Read the story together. Stop at the words you wrote down. Write the sentence. Then rewrite it in your own words. This will take several days, so don't rush.

In text citations: After you quote a text, you need to give a parenthetical reference. Usually, this would include the author's name and the page number where the text usually appears: (Collier 45). Note: no commas, no mention of the word "page," and the punctuation mark comes after the closed parenthesis.

"Oh, I was scared. The war had finally come to Redding, and it was terrible" (Collier 51).

Notice and Note

Getting to a story's central themes (general messages) requires us to look at several smaller parts of the text: word choices, patterns, imagery, figurative language, mood, tone, perspective, dialogue. . .

The process of breaking all this down is called close reading.

Task: Notice and Note handout,  close read what your group considers noteworthy moments in chapters 11 &12.

On a separate piece of paper: Today in our book group we (noticed, discussed, debated, discovered, analyzed, agreed. . . )

So, what do you think the central message of the story is?  Remember to consider our TDP strategy ( every text has topic, every story contains details/events that build up to make a point about the topic or subject matter)

HW: Complete book by tomorrow. Between chapters 13 and 14 you should write 4 author and me and 4 open-ended questions. (8 total)  You will have a brief in class assessment.

Finishing Scripts: Tory Vs.Patriot

Reading check: NEWS REPORT!!!!: Choose a major moment from pages 74-99! You and your camera crew have just arrived on the scene! Report on the event for your faithful viewers: WHO?WHAT?WHEN?WHERE?WHY?HOW? You may refer to your book, but you only have 10 minutes. And it starts....NOW!

SENTENCE STARTER: We've got breaking news here, folks!

BACK TO SCRIPTS! Remember, we are working with perspective.Use the book and the petition to help you determine how these two sides would develop their arguments.

Tory: It is preposterous to think that this war will do any good. Families are being torn apart, not just by death, but by politics! How absurd!

Patriot: The only thing that is absurd is how some of us have become unaware of the chains wrapped our ankles!

Tory: What are you implying!

HW: Read chapter 8 (VIII), pages 99-113.
